Syd Barrett and his Songs

Although my biggest pop music influence has always been The Beatles, one other major influence on my songwriting has been Syd Barrett (aka Roger Barrett, 1946-2006). This despite the fact that his body of work is small and of uneven quality. Although most of his songs are good and great, the recording of them on his solo albums did not match their potential, although those albums have their moments. There is something about his songs- perhaps a reckless disregard for the conventions of pop songwriting and openness to including all kinds of things you don’t normally find in songs- that captivates me and many others.

I first got into Pink Floyd through Dark Side of the Moon in the summer of 1989. After that I set about getting most of their albums. In the spring of 1990 I got a budget early Floyd compilation called Relics.

The songs on that album recorded after Barrett left were different from the Floyd I was familiar with but not so different. But as soon as I hear Barrett singing “Arnold Layne” it seemed like a different band altogether. I also loved “See Emily Play”, and “Bike”. I got The Piper at the Gates of Dawn  soon afterwards, and although it took me a while to get into it, once I did I was hooked.

Strangely enough I don’t play any of those songs. The songs I do cover all come from a later time, a time when he was struggling with mental disorder, struggling to function as a creative artist in an environment that suddenly took on a hostile hue in his mind and in which his horizons closed in on him without remorse. “Jugband Blues”, as I sing it, is a rather sarcastic but also embattled place to be, and “Opel” is beautifully desolate. “Terrapin”, on the other hand, is peaceful while “Apples and Oranges” is oddly joyous. Enjoy!

Undercover Cop (song)

A song inspired by this news story and other tales of undercover cops infiltrating activist groups, even going so far as to carry on affairs with activists.

I’m Only Sleeping (Beatles cover)

At this time of year it can be hard to get out of bed…

Flashing Back to the 1980’s: Eye of the Tiger

My wife sometimes tells me I must have slept through the 1980’s. Although that is an exaggeration, I must admit I only got to really know this song recently through a Montreal singing group called Best Friends. The arrangement here is based on the arrangement we used to do, kazoos and all. The track even has a bit of the “friends hanging out and someone’s place and singing” ambiance that was central to Best Friends, although I sing and play everything myself.

Anthem (Leonard Cohen cover)

This one of my favourite songs, and another one I like to do live. Like Leonard Cohen, I grew up in Montreal. However, I am forty years younger and sing this song about an octave higher:

Ring the bells that still can ring

Forget your perfect offering

There is a crack in everything

That’s how the light gets in

Across the Universe

John Lennon was murdered 35 years ago yesterday, at age 40. Of course, he and the Beatles have been a tremendous influence upon my songwriting. This is a song I sometimes do live.

A Seasonal Tune

So get a load of this track….bells, choral arrangements, interpolations of two Christmas carols, festive dance beats, jolly melodica, some wicked synth hooks, holiday cheer…oh yes, and there’s a song in there somewhere! Something about treasuring and celebrating the time we have with ourselves at each other in this and every season, and how it sure would be nice to actually live peace and goodwill for all instead of using promises of same as a pretext for division, discrimination, and violence. As for me, I’m still getting the hang of promoting my music..

An Awakening/Great Beyond

12301636_10153071743172820_5909065539887526404_n

The news has been full of war and rumours of war, of people who have lost everything, of hatred and fear spreading like wildfire, of defiance, resistance and backlash. The days get shorter and grayer, and sometimes it seems the greyness, the darkness and the cold seep into my soul and won’t let go. Are these the declining days of a species that is just too stupidly clever for its own good, that cannot get its act together to save its life? I prefer to hope not. Here are two songs to share with the world, and if they bring hope or consolation, joy or resilience to anyone out there it will be worth the sharing.
